singaporeans speak funny english

by MeL on April 23, 2009

saw a report on new paper ‘announcing’ the existence of this anti-Singapore facebook group called Singapore Sucks.

Read through the report briefly and managed to read about some crimes Singaporeans are guilty of. I wouldn’t dare to think that i’m even remotely patriotic, that’s a very strong word. But i’ve come to accept, embrace and love my country of the past 23.5 years.
One of comment was that Singaporeans speak funny english. I would think that the ones who said and the ones who concur with this is culturally very naive. As are those who thinks that the french speaks funny english and the viet speaks funny english. To construct the/your world based on the places you’ve been to and the exposure you’ve had is naive. To establish your own standards and then expect to impose it on others is naive. Especially the almighty ones who are eloquently proud of their freshly adopted foreign accent.

Language, at best is a tool of communication. If it gets around, it goes around. If there ain’t any major problems in communication between Singaporeans using a language they are comfortable with, then I don’t see no problems with it. If you’re in a new place and are unable to comprehend a language that is natively spoken, you don’t place judgement on it based on your own standards. In a typical english dictionary, that is what they meant by cultural differences. Even if you refuse to embrace it, you don’t denounce it like a child who doesn’t get his ways.

If you ain’t ready to live with differences, you ain’t ready for many things in life. Or better yet, move to Mars, I heard they speak only one language there.
